Lone Star Dispatch Issue #4:

Story1: Teacher of the year 2016: Theatre teacher Marco Bazan (A2)
Summary: Every year Bowie selects a new Teacher of the Year. Five different teachers are nominated for the award based off of teacher evaluations. For the year of 2016 theatre teacher Marco Bazan was selected, for his outstanding instructing and communicating abilities. Marco Bazan was incredibly honored to have won the award. He also gave credit to the other nominees and great teachers throughout Bowie.
Who? Marco Bazan
What? Won 2016 Teacher of the Year
Where? Bowie
When? 2016, announced in 2017
Why? His passion, he is good at instructing, he provides guidance, and is good at communicating with his students.
Who was quoted in this story? Marco Bazan
Strongest quote: "There are so many excellent teachers on this campus, I feel very lucky to work among greatness." - Marco Bazan
This quote was used in the very middle of the paragraph.
In my opinion the sentence was not the most interesting. However, because the story is so short I think many people, like me, will continue reading anyways.

Story2: Peaceful protesters hope to solve long-lasting problems (A7)
Summary: Recently with the inauguration of our new president there has been a lot of talk about equality and rights for all people of all colors and genders. Austin is a city that is very passionate about fighting for what we believe in. There have been many peaceful protests downtown. At this time they are mainly centering around equal treatment and pay of men and women. Protestors ask that everything remains peaceful and that their wishes be granted.
Who? Men and Women of all ages
What? Conducted a peaceful protest
Where? The Austin capital
When? January 21, 2017
Why? To ask for more equality between genders
No one was quoted.
However, the lead sentence did make me want to keep reading.

Story3: Singing her way to the top (B4)
Summary: Every year choir students work on preparing for their annual competitions. This year is particularly special because it is the first time a Bowie student has ever made it to the All-State competition. This student is Bella Cuminato, a junior who has bee moving her way up the ranks since she was a freshman. Her fellow classmates have also been doing really well throughout their competitions, and are extremely happy for Bella's successes.
Who? Junior Bella Cuminato
What? Made it to the choir All-State Competition
Where? From Bowie
When? 2nd semester of her junior year
Why? She has spent lots of time practicing her singing pieces and shows great talent and potential.
There were multiple people quoted, Bella Cuminato, Hannah Cherukuri,  and Caitlin Gasco.
I believe that the strongest quote was from Bella Cuminato saying, "I was absolutely inspired by my classmates. There were so many people who I knew were working harder than ever, and being surrounded by talented people gave me a drive to do better" (B4). This quote was found towards the end of the story.
I don't think that the lead sentence was super intriguing, but it definitely was a good lead way into what the story was going to be about.

Photo1: Squad Goals by: Ashley Ramirez (A1)
Critique: I think that if the photo was supposed to be about the whole cheerleading squad that it would have been better to actually include what the whole team, was doing and not just one person. I also think that maybe the photographer should have positioned themselves to where there wasn't an awkward slanted angle. However, as a whole I know that it must be very difficult to shoot at football games and I think his photo turned out very well
Rule of Composition: I see maybe a little bit of background with the black sky
Subject: The cheer team and specifically Jordan Haschke
Lighting: I think that the photo is properly exposed
Shallow or Deep Depth of Field: I don't see any depth of field

Photo2: Jumping Hurdles by: Mia Barbosa (B1)
Critique: I honestly really like this action photo. However, I don't really see any different rules of composition present.  I think that if the photographer played around with the rules of composition more this photo could have turned out even better.
Rule of Composition: As I said before I think that it is a really cool action shot but there wasn't really any rules of composition.
Subject: Celeste Hermes and her horse
Lighting: Photo was properly exposed
Shallow or Depth of Field: I can see maybe a little bit of shallow depth of field

Photo3: Plan of Action by: Shelby Papst (B4)
Critique: I cannot tell if it's the photo itself or just the way it ended up printing on the newspaper, but the photo is blurry. I think that maybe if the photographer had chosen a different angle with the natural lighting instead of against it, it may have turned out better.
Rule of Composition: The way that the people are position does create a little bit of symmetry and framing.
Subject: Matthew Humprey and his tech crew
Lighting: The photo doesn't have the best lighting but its good enough to see what's happening.
Shallow or Depth of Field: I do not see any depth of field.

Photo4: A balancing act by: Ashley Ramirez (A8)
Critique: I think that this photo is absolutely amazing. If I were to give any critique it would be on the lighting, it makes the picture look a little bit blurry.
Rule of Composition: I see the rule of thirds in this photo.
Subject: Kate Stubbs
Lighting: The lighting could be a little better but it is technically properly exposed.
Shallow or Depth of Field: I do see a shallow depth of field

Photo5: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun(damental Human Rights) by Reagan Wallace (B8)
Critique: This is probably my favorite photo out of the whole newspaper. I really have no major critiques for it.
Rule of Composition: I see that the photographer used cropping to center in on the subject.
Subject: A feminist
Lighting: The photo is properly exposed
Shallow or Depth of Field: Maybe a little bit of depth of field in the background

As I said in the above section, my favorite photo is "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun(damental) Human Rights)" by Reagan Wallace. I think that the woman who created the poster was very creative. I think as a whole this photo really speaks for all of the story that Reagan was covering. As I mentioned before I did see a bit of cropping that helped focus and center on the subject.

My least favorite photo was probably "Plan of Action" by Shelby Papst. This is simply because the photo was a bit blurry. I also think that the lighting is off. However, it's not a terrible photo it is just that all the other photos in the newspaper were better.

I personally would have also liked to work with Reagan Wallace on the feminist protests downtown. I feel that would have been the most fun to experience. If I'm being honest I also think it would have been the easiest to get good photos for and easiest to write about.

I really like the photography present in this issue of the newspaper. I think that the photographers can work on lighting and focusing a little better. Since most of the photos were action shots I think that it caused the photos to come out just a little bit odd. As a whole however, I can see how hard each of the newspaper staff worked on their own pieces, and it turned out looking very good.

Front Pages of the World

1. My favorite front page is the cover of the Colorado Spring Independent Newspaper. I really like how the cover photo is completely blown up, it kind of looks more like a magazine cover. There isn't too many words on it, which makes it more attractive to someone young like me who doesn't like to read much. I also like how there's a color scheme with the text and photo, it makes it look a lot more clean and organized. I don't feel lost or confused within all the text and the fact that it is in all color makes it extremely eye catching.
2. Not surprisingly, my favorite headline is the only one on the cover called "This Isn't History". I think that the topic is very relevant with it being February, and with everything thats going on in the U.S both politically and socially. As I said in question one, the cover photo just draws me in and creates a lot of curiosity about what the article is actually gonna be about.

3. There is only one story on the front cover of the newspaper that I chose. Although this may not be the best choice, (I'm assuming by looking at other newspaper covers), it actually makes me like this cover more because I don't feel lost in a pool of words. Some newspapers stress me out just by looking at their covers.

4. All the newspaper covers, no matter what, have the name of their newspaper in big and/or bold letters at the top. Mostly all newspapers (except the one I chose) tend to have a large main photo with the occasional smaller photos. They all have text paragraphs that are shaped into rectangle text boxes. These texts boxes typically cover up most of the page and outline the main photos. Some other small details they all have are the location, the month or full date, and the author or photographer of the pictures and text.

5. Sizing of text and photos change a lot between different newspapers. Where exactly the main photo is placed also tends to vary, along with the number of photos and stories that are actually on the front cover. Although a small change, the boldness or font of the text tends to change a lot especially in the titles.

Extra Credit Assignment

PetaPixel:

Purpose:

PetaPixel is a blog that works to share numerous different written articles varying in topic. The blog works on sharing the newest and most useful photography gadgets that can help any photographer improve their work. Along with offering new advice, the blog also offers writings on current events in the photography industry, as well as some humorous pieces. Something I also noticed was that PetaPixel offered a lot of random, but really interesting stories that aren't necessarily relevant to everyday life, but would be really interesting to read in any available free time. Such as the article I read today on how a man risked the life of a female model by hanging her off the side of a building just to get a "cool" picture. I would add this website to my bookmarks, however if I'm extremely busy and needing to learn lots of intense facts on how to use different gadgets and techniques, this is probably not the website I would click on. Although I did find a couple of articles that offered more serious information it did take bit of searching, and still isn't necessarily the most relevant. Having said that I would recommend reading this blog to anyone who has some extra time on there hands, and just can't their mind off photography.

Rating:

Overall, I would rate this website a 4.5/5 stars. I do think the website offered a lot of great input on lens and the newest gadgets. I also felt that the more humorous content was extremely interesting to read. Despite being purposely humorous, if actually given the time and thought I feel that you can really learn a lot of new information on how to take great photos. I also felt that the actual formatting of blog was really nice. I didn't find it difficult to find out how to access articles and didn't feel overwhelmed with information. The .5 was simply taken off because I felt that it lacked a bit of relevancy, however I can see how some photographers may argue differently.

Something New:

As I mentioned in my "Purpose" paragraph I read up on an article about a Russian model named Viktoria Odintsova  who willing risked her life for a photo. The model paired up with a daredevil photographer and hung off a 1,000ft skyscraper to capture an Instagram pic. I'm choosing to share this information because I think it gives a lot of insight on the crazy and ridiculous stuff this blog posts about. It also shows that true photographers, (or crazy Russian models), are willing to go to extreme extents to capture incredible photos and that can act as motivation for others to step outside of there comfort zones.
